The New York Mets lost a crucial rubber match to the Atlanta Braves by a substantial mark of 14-1 (Box Score).
Pitching
New Jersey native and Seton Hall Prep alumni Rick Porcello got his first start in a Mets uniform on Sunday night.
Unfortunately, he had a night to forget going two innings and giving up five runs (four earned), on seven hits, and three walks as he was unable to escape the third inning. Overall, he was charged with seven total runs (six earned).
In the top of the first, Ozzie Albies ripped a one out double down the right field line to set things up for Freddie Freeman. Porcello walked Freeman to put two on with one out against Marcell Ozuna.
The 31-year-old was able to get Ozuna to fly out to Nimmo in center but allowed the game’s first run on an RBI single up the middle by Matt Adams.
The Braves weren’t done there as Dansby Swanson blooped a run-scoring single to center to extend the early lead to 2-0.
In the top of the second, Ender Inciarte and William Contreras recorded back-to-back singles to setup first-and-third with one out.
Luckily, Porcello induced an inning ending double play to escape the jam.
An error by McNeil allowed Albies to reach first to start the top of the third inning and Porcello issued a walk to Freeman to put traffic on the bases again for Ozuna.
Ozuna ripped a run scoring double over J.D. Davis‘s head to add to the Braves lead.
With second and third and nobody out, Porcello issued another walk to load the bases. Swanson took full advantage as he tattooed a two-run double to put the Braves up 5-1.
As a result, Luis Rojas pulled Porcello for Corey Oswalt with no outs in the third.
Oswalt, picked up where Porcello left off walking Austin Riley to load the bases for the second time in the inning with no outs.
Inciarte crushed a two-run double to right to score two more runs making the score 7-1 in a five run inning.
Oswalt finally stopped the bleeding by striking out Ronald Acuna and getting Albies to fly out.
In his second inning of work, Oswalt allowed a leadoff double to center off the bat of Freeman. With two outs, Swanson struck again smacking a two-run homer to right field padding to the lead to make it 9-1.
Oswalt came out for a third inning in the top of the fifth, where he surrendered the 11th run of the contest on back-t0-back doubles to Acuna and Albies. The right-hander got Freeman to fly out to end the frame, but the Braves held a 10-1 lead headed to the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Ozuna and Riley smacked solo shots off Oswalt to extend their lead to 12-1.
Rojas brought in reliever Paul Sewald to handle the seventh and subbed in Andres Gimenez for McNeil at third, and Luis Guillorme at second for Robinson Cano.
Sewald continued the theme of the night giving up a two run home run to Albies expanding the lead to 14-1.
Coming off a poor outing on Saturday, Hunter Strickland worked around a leadoff single to throw a clean inning in the ninth.
Offense
Left-hander Sean Newcomb got the start for the Braves tonight and went three-and-a-third allowing one run, on three hits, with one walk, and one strikeout.
Following an Amed Rosario groundout, Jeff McNeil reached base after being hit by a pitch to start the night.
Sure enough, Pete Alonso would get plunked, as well to put runners on first-and-second with one out. Despite erratic control from Newcomb, Yoenis Cespedes helped him out by going around on a check swing for the second out. Michael Conforto bounced out to third to end the threat in the first.
In the bottom of the second, backup catcher Tomas Nido, who started in place of Wilson Ramos tonight, drew a two out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
On the next pitch, Brandon Nimmo sliced an opposite field double off the left field wall to plate the team’s first run of the game cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the bottom of the third trailing by six runs, Cespedes worked a two out walk.
This brought up Conforto, who pulled a base hit to right field to put runners on first-and-third with two outs. However, Davis could not keep the line moving as he bounced out to shortstop.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Nido picked up the Mets third hit of the night on a double down the left field line.
Braves manager Brian Snitker pulled Newcomb in favor of Jhoulys Chacin.
Nimmo drew a walk to put two runners on base for Rosario, but the shortstop fouled out and McNeil flew out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the eighth, Eduardo Nunez reached first on an infield single but landed awkwardly on the brag and was forced to leave the game with a lower leg injury.
The Mets offense looked lifeless again tonight scratching across a mere one run on five hits.
The bats scored a combined five runs in the series loss to the division rival Braves.
