The New York Mets released Jenrry Mejia on Tuesday afternoon despite a strong winter ball campaign for the Toros del Este in the Dominican Republic.

Mejia, 29, was given a conditional reinstatement in July that allowed him to pitch in two minor league games to close out the 2018 season. The move clears a potential 40-Man roster spot that he would have needed upon his return from the Commissioner’s Exempt List.

Mejia most recently threw four shut out innings for Toros del Este, in which he only gave up one hit, struck out four and walked nobody. He has a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in nine winter ball innings this season.

Mejia’s last stint in the major leagues came in 2015 with the Mets. For his major league career, the right-hander is 9-14 with 28 saves (all in 2014), 3.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 183.1 innings.
