The Mets announced they have signed free-agent RHP LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.

If Hawkins makes the team, he will earn a base salary of $1 million with chance to earn more in incentives.

The 40-year old Hawkins spent last year with the Los Angeles Angels where he went 2-3 with a 3.49 ERA. In 42 innings pitched he posted a 4.9 strikeout rate and 2.8 walk rate.

Hawkins has missed chunks of time in 2010 and 2011 due to shoulder surgery, and last season he was out for nearly a month with a fractured finger.

The veteran righthander will give the Mets another option to consider this Spring as they look to revamp their bullpen.

Despite the signing of Hawkins and Scott Atchison earlier this week, the Mets are still looking for bullpen help according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
