Over the last few days, the Yankees have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring Zach Britton from the Orioles, and their rotation by snagging J.A. Happ from the Blue Jays.
In that time, however, New York A.L. has lost Gary Sanchez to injury, Aaron Judge to injury and has traded away outfield prospect Billy McKinney.
With that being said, the Mets may be of assistance.
Catcher Devin Mesoraco and outfielder Jose Bautista are both impending free agents and have been rumored as potential trade candidates.
Mesoraco, 30, came over to New York in the deal that sent Matt Harvey to Cincinnati.
Since joining the Mets, he has appeared in 48 games, hitting .227/.305/.407 with seven homers and 23 RBI. Mesoraco’s best trait, perhaps, comes with his ability to handle a pitching staff.
That veteran presence would help complement Austin Romine across town until, or if, Sanchez returns.
Bautista, 37, signed with the Mets back in May after being cut by the Braves.
Since joining New York, he has hit .231/.387/.434 with six homers and 24 RBI.
Losing Sanchez and Judge are two big blows for a team looking to make a World Series push. However, the additions of Mesoraco and Bautista would help give them depth for the final two months of the season and into the postseason.
However, the only hurdle would be the Mets and Yankees actually striking a deal.
The last Major League trade they made came back in 2004 where they swapped Mike Stanton for Felix Heredia.
But if the Mets are willing to suck it up and do business with their rivals, this trade could make sense for both sides.
