In what can only be deemed a ridiculous formality, suspended relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia and the New York Mets agreed on Tuesday to a one-year contract worth $1,976,000.

Because he was given a lifetime ban from baseball after testing positive for a PED for the third time, Mejia will not collect one red cent of this deal.

Mejia, 27, remains on the Mets restricted list and because he has four years of major league service he was eligible for salary arbitration. His salary was cut the maximum 20 percent from his $2.47 million salary last year.

Next month, Mejia can apply for reinstatement to Commissioner Rob Manfred. Even if he were to win his appeal, he would not be eligible to play until the 2018 season.

The former Mets closer appeared in 113 games with the Mets including 18 starts.

In 2014, Mejia had his best season with the Mets, posting a 3.65 ERA and saving 28 games, however he also had a very high 1.438 WHIP and 3.9 walk rate.

I can’t believe he’s only 27, what an idiot.
