As per multiple reports (Tenchy Rodriguez of ESPN was first to report agreement, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports was first to correctly report money), the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a trade that would send Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to Queens.

Cano, 36, hit .303/.374/.471 in 348 plate appearances for the Mariners in 2018 after missing 80 games due to a violation of MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Diaz, 24, has a career year this past season, pitching to a 1.96 earned-run average in 73 appearances (73.1 innings), picking up a league-leading 57 saves, striking out 15.2 and walking 2.1 per nine innings with a 208 ERA+ rating.

The Mets will be sending outfielder Jay Bruce, reliever Anthony Swarzak, and minor leaguers Jarred Kelenic, Justin Dunn, and Gerson Bautista to Seattle and will be receiving $20 million in cash from the M’s.

Between Bruce (two years, $26 million) and Swarzak (one year, $8.5 million), the Mets are unloading $34.5 million in salary, are tacking on another $20 million from Seattle, and taking on Cano’s five-year, $120 million deal. Diaz made $570,800 in 2018 and will be arbitration-eligible in 2020.

Bruce struggled in 2018, hitting just .223/.310/.370 with a career-low nine home runs and 27 RBI for the Mets. Multiple injuries limited the veteran to only 94 games.

The 2018 season was a struggle for Swarzak as well, he posted a 6.15 ERA in 26.1 innings.

Kelenic (2018) and Dunn (2016) were first-round draft picks of the Mets and are both highly regarded as prospects.

The 19-year-old Kelenic was recently ranked by Baseball America as the Mets No. 4 prospect and MLB Pipeline had him No. 62 in baseball. The left-handed hitting outfielder had a .839 OPS in his first taste of pro ball this past season between the rookie level GCL Mets and Kingsport Mets.

Dunn was seen as the consensus best pitching prospect in the Mets improving farm system. Baseball America had him as their No. 5 Mets prospect, and MLB Pipeline had him at No. 89 in baseball.

The 23-year-old finished the 2018 season with a 3.59 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 10.4 K.9 in 135.1 innings between Advanced-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton.
