Prior to tonight’s game RHP Zack Wheeler has been activated from the 10-Day injured list. Wheeler was placed on the IL on July 16, retroactive to July 12, with right shoulder fatigue. Wheeler will get the start tonight against the Pirates.
In a corresponding move, RHP Walker Lockett has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Wheeler will get one chance to show contending teams that he is 100% healthy before the July 31 deadline. The 29-year-old has a 4.69 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 1.28 WHIP, and career-high 9.8 K/9 this season in 119 innings.
The right-hander will be a free agent after this season, though there’s been recent rumors that the Mets could look to trade fellow starter Noah Syndergaard and extend Wheeler.
Lockett, 25, had the best outing of his major league career on July 20 when he held the Giants to one run in five innings.
