The New York Mets announced Saturday that they have acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for right-hander Bobby Wahl, as well as right-handed prospect Adam Hill and infield prospect Felix Valerio.

Broxton, 28, is a defense forward center fielder, who logged 11 defensive runs saved (DRS) and had a 6.5 UZR in just 134.1 innings for the Brewers in 2018, but also has some pop potential as he clubbed 20 homers in 2017.

“[He] is a dynamic athlete with the ability to impact the game in the outfield, on the bases and with his bat. He adds depth to our major league roster for 2019 and into the future,” Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said.

The Florida native struggled at the plate last year, batting just .179/.281/.410 with an 84 wRC+ and .299 WOBA across 89 plate appearances. However, he is a career .235/.353/.437 hitter vs left-handed pitchers. That’s good for a .344 wOBA and 111 wRC+. He also adds some speed on the base paths, as he recorded 20+ stolen bases in 2016 and 2017.

As for Milwaukee’s return, they are getting back the hard-throwing Wahl, who was acquired by the Mets in July in the deal that sent Jeurys Familia to the Oakland Athletics.

Wahl, 26, pitched in seven games for New York in 2018 after being acquired, but was lit up to the tune of a 10.13 ERA in just 5.1 innings, including two homers against.

The Virginia native does have promising stuff, however, but it will require some fine tuning. But if the Brewers can help him hone in on his skills, his fastball and breaking stuff could play well out of Milwaukee’s bullpen.

Wahl was ranked as the No. 28 prospect in New York’s system by MLB Pipeline at the time of the deal.

Hill, 21, was drafted by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of South Carolina. After signing, he embarked on his professional career with Short-A Brooklyn, where he registered a 2.35 ERA and 15.3 K/9 in 15.1 innings pitched.

The South Carolina native was not ranked by MLB Pipeline in the Mets top 30 prospects at the time of the trade.

Valerio, 18, began his professional career with the Mets this past season after signing out of the Dominican Republic. He spent his time this past year in the Dominican Summer League, where he hit .319/.409/.433 with three homers and 16 stolen bases.

If the Mets decide to keep Juan Lagares, the tandem of him and Broxton in center will make for one of the best defensive center fields in baseball. However, this move could also signal a Lagares trade, as Broxton is a more affordable option.

Regardless, Mets’ GM Brodie Van Wagenen has made a conscious effort to bolster the team’s outfield, as he has now brought Broxton, Braxton Lee, Rajai Davis, Gregor Blanco and Rymer Liriano into the fold.
