The Mets are riding an incredible high this week. From taking the Subway series in dramatic fashion to forcing Cy Young candidate Sandy Alcantara out of his start against the team on Friday night. Now the Mets continue to bring good news as it has been reported by NY Post‘s Mike Puma that the team plans to activate Jacob deGrom for his first major league start in about a year.

deGrom will get his first start of the season against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. The return of deGrom will give the Mets a glimpse of how dominant their 1-2 punch of Max Scherzer and deGrom can be.

The former two-time Cy Young award winner was on his way to another extraordinary season last year until the lingering injuries forced the Mets to place him on IL. deGrom posted a 7-2 record last season with an incredible 1.08 ERA in 15 games.

The Mets have managed to post a 62-37 record this season as they have held on to 1st place in the NL East without their ace. The team has relied on a mixed bag of pitchers to keep them in position for a shot at a World Series appearance.

While Scherzer has been his dominant self for the better part of his starts with the Mets, the “other guys” have held this pitching staff together. From Tylor Megill’s incredible start to Taijuan Walker’s dominant 8-2 record, and even the addition of Chris Bassitt along with David Peterson.

It will be a welcoming sight once deGrom takes the field for the Mets. It may also be the perfect time to do so, as it will give him ample time to prepare for a playoff run. If the Mets are to go for it all this season, they will need their ace to be present and fully healthy.
