Last night, Devin Mesoraco exited the game in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Toronto Blue Jays with a head injury as he was hit by both an errant pitch and a backswing.
Once he left the game, the catcher went through concussion protocol to make sure he was okay in the regard, in which the team determined he was, but will have to be monitored over the next week.
The catcher was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer to his name when he left the game last night.
On the year, Mesoraco is hitting .225/.312/.424 with eight home runs and 21 RBI in 151 at-bats between the Cincinnati Reds and the Mets.
It is unclear if the 30-year old will miss any time, but if he were to, Kevin Plawecki will receive all the playing time, in all likelihood, as he is the only other catcher currently on the roster.
If the Mets were to determine that Mesoraco needs a DL stint or that they need to call-up a third catcher, Jose Lobaton and Tomas Nido would be the likely names to receive it.
Plawecki was set to split catching duties with Travis d’Arnaud this season before they both went down with injuries in mid-April that prompted the Mets to acquire Mesoraco in exchange for Matt Harvey, as Lobaton and Nido were simply not cutting it for the first month or so as the team’s tandem.
The 27-year catcher, though, has been riding a bit of a hot streak of late as Plawecki has six hits in his last 21 at-bats (.286) with one home run, six RBI, and two walks.
While this could simply be just a nice streak for him, he did hit .260/.364/.400 with three home runs and 13 RBI last season in 37 games (100 at-bats) to give him a 106 wRC+.
He actually has a higher number in the last category this season as he currently has a 113 wRC+ to go along with a .229/.360/.386 slash line on the year in 27 games played (83 at-bats).
Obviously, it remains to be seen if Mesoraco misses any time, but Plawecki figures to get a spike in playing time if he does.
