Jeff McNeil is a hit machine, there is no denying that. Over an injury plagued six year minor league career, he hit .311/.380/.443. In 2018 with both Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas he hit .342/.411/.617 with 19 home runs.
The sweet swinging lefty has waisted no time showing the Mets he can produce at the big league level. Through ten games, 25 at-bats, McNeil is hitting .320 with a home run, double, and four walks.
This weekend he put on a show for the home crowd at Citi Field. On Saturday night, he went 4-for-4 with an opposite field double in the Mets win. As a result, he was bumped up to the two spot in the lineup on Sunday, and came through with an RBI double.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway has loved what the 26-year old has shown him thus far. “I’m glad we have him.. He’s done a great job at the plate, his defense in the field was very impressive too, as well.”
With his performance on Saturday, McNeil became just the seventh Mets rookie to have a four hit game within his first ten big league games.
McNeil was obviously pleased with his big night at the plate. “I felt really good up there. I’m finally starting to see the pitches well and getting some pitches to hit,” McNeil said.
In what has been such a disappointing season for the Mets, it is nice seeing the rookies come in and produce. Since being promoted, McNeil has been a bright spot in the Mets lineup.
McNeil has a nice approach at the plate, and has a smooth, compact swing. He is also a table-setter, and fits in nicely towards the top of the Mets lineup. The 26-year old certainly deserves every chance to win a starting spot for the Mets in 2019.
