After clearing revocable waivers, the San Francisco Giants have a deal in place that will send outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the New York Yankees according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
After spending the first nine years of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, being named to five All-Star teams, and winning the 2013 NL MVP, McCutchen was traded to the Giants for Bryan Reynolds, reliever Kyle Crick, and international bonus pool money during the offseason last year.
This time around, just two months away from free agency, McCutchen, 31, is being dealt to the Yankees for prospect Abiatal Avelino and another yet to be named prospect.
In 130 games for San Francisco this year, the 31-year-old is slashing .255/.357/.415 with 15 homers, 55 RBI, 28 doubles, and a 110 OPS+.
With Aaron Judge still sidelined with a wrist injury, this move solidifies a New York roster that will likely have to win a wild-card game to advance to the ALDS.
Since the trade was finalized before the August 31 waiver deadline, Andrew McCutchen would be eligible to play for New York in the postseason.
Today is the last day that players can be acquired and still be eligible to play in the playoffs with their new team.
