It was Mazeika’s moment on Friday night for the Mets, along with the bullpen throwing a gem as the Mets defeated the Diamondbacks 5-4 at Citi Field for their third straight win.
David Peterson was only able to go 1.2 innings on Friday night, leaving the last 8.1 innings in the hands of the bullpen. They would allow the Mets to get back in the game until the tenth inning when Patrick Mazeika.became a Citi field hero.
Peterson got the nod to start the game Friday evening for the Mets. It would be a very rough, short outing for the Mets’ left-hander. He would go just 1.2 innings, giving up three hits, three earned runs, three walks, and struck out just three over the course of 55 pitches (31 strikes).
The second inning was when things got rough for Peterson. He struck out Asdrubal Cabrera, gave up a single to Pavin Smith, followed by a strikeout of Nick Ahmed before things took a turn. With two outs, Peterson gave up a single to Josh Rojas, walked Zac Gallen, hit Tim Locastro with bases loaded to score Smith, walked Carson Kelly to score Rojas, then walked Christian Walker to score Gallen, walking in three runs before his night would end.
Robert Gsellman would come in and get Escobar to pop out to get the Mets out of the inning and prevent any further damage from being done that inning. He would go a total of 2.1 innings pitched, giving up three hits, one earned run, and one walk. The run would be given up in the third inning. After allowing singles to Cabrera, Ahmed, and Rojas, Gallen grounded out into a force out with one out that scored Cabrera. He worked through the fourth inning before being replaced by Tommy Hunter on the mound.

Hunter threw two innings, giving up two hits and no runs. He would be replaced by Jacob Barnes in the seventh inning. He struck out two, giving up just one hit.
Miguel Castro pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Mets, walking one and striking out one.
Edwin Diaz would come on in relief for Castro to pitch the ninth. He struck out one in a scoreless inning of work.
Aaron Loup would come on to throw a scoreless tenth for the Mets, striking out one.
The Mets bullpen was one of the major stories tonight. They accumulated 8.1 innings of work, giving up just one run together after Peterson came out of the game early after a rough outing
The Mets offense kicked into gear in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Francisco Lindor singled to kick start the offense. He would advance to second on a throwing error by Diamondbacks’ third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera. Michael Conforto followed Lindor with an RBI single to center field that scored Lindor to get the Mets on the board and decrease the Diamondbacks’ lead to 4-1.
The Mets would go scoreless until the sixth inning when they struck another two-out rally that started with a lead-off walk by Pete Alonso. Smith would then ground-out, but advance Alonso to second. After a Kevin Pillar pop-out, Jonathan Villar singled on a line drive to center field, scoring Alonso and bringing the Mets within two of the Diamondbacks and decreasing their lead to 4-2.
The seventh inning is when the bats really fired up for the Mets. The inning started with a lead-off walk by Tomas Nido. McNeil would line out, bringing up Francisco Lindor, who would then send a two-run home run out of the park and score Tomas Nido to tie the game at four.

The Mets offense would stay quiet through the ninth inning.
The tenth inning is when the heroics occurred for the Mets. Per the MLB extra innings rule, Pete Alonso started on second base for the Mets. Stefan Crichton intentionally walked Dominic Smith to put runners on first and second. Kevin Pillar flied out to right field, advancing Alonso to third. Crichton then intentionally walked Villar to move Dominic Smith to second and load the bases.
After a Diamondbacks mound visit, Patrick Mazeika came in to pinch-hit for Aaron Loup, and in his first at-bat at Citi Field, he was a hero! Mazeika would reach on a fielder’s choice, with a slow roller fielded by Crichton, who attempted to throw the ball home, but with a bobble at the plate, Alonso scored and the Mets would take the extra innings walk-off win in 10 innings, defeating the Diamondbacks 5-4
The Mets’ defense had just one error on Friday night. It was a fielding error by Villar in the fourth, but that error wouldn’t end up costing the Mets.
The Mets and Diamondbacks will continue their series at Citi Field Saturday night at 7:10 PM. New York will go after their fourth straight win.
