Max Scherzer left Wednesday’s game with “left side discomfort.” That’s typically code word for an oblique injury.

After the game, Scherzer said he said he didn’t think it was a “major strain.” He’ll get imaging done Thursday.

Max Scherzer left Wednesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals early in the middle of the sixth inning due to an apparent injury.

During an at-bat with Albert Pujols with a man on first and second, Scherzer threw a slider on an 0-1 count for a ball. He immediately looked to the dugout after the pitch and said, “I’m done,” gesturing with his hands across his neck to notify he was finished.

It’s unclear what kind of injury or ailment Scherzer is facing. He was at 87 pitches when he left the game, allowing two runs (one earned) over 5 2/3 innings. He started the year with a slight hamstring ailment, but he was able to start the second game of the season. Scherzer’s 2021 season ended with a case of “dead arm” in the postseason, too.

On the SNY broadcast, Ron Darling said he could read Scherzer’s lips saying, “I just can’t go anymore.”

Adam Ottavino replaced Scherzer and struck out Pujols.

Losing Scherzer for an extended period would hurt the Mets as they’re already without Jacob deGrom since Opening Day and Tylor Megill since the end of last week.
