The New York Mets (59-58) defeated the San Diego Padres (50-67) by a score of 5-1 at Citi Field Sunday afternoon. That’s two in a row for those of who are not paying attention!

Pitching:

Steven Matz was on the hill for the Mets today and he was absolutely fantastic!   Matz took a no-hitter into the 8th inning!  With one out in the eighth, Alexei Ramirez smacked a seeing eye flare over the first base bag that barely stayed fair to break up the no-hit bid.  It was a tough break as Ramirez clearly swung late.  Matz went  7.1 innings giving up no runs while walking two and striking out eight.

Addison Reed came in to relieve Matz and was able to successfully close out the inning without allowing a run.

Gabriel Ynoa came on to close out the ninth and was a little shaky as he was likely not used to coming in out of a pen in back to back days. Yangervis Solarte was able to put a run on the board for the Padres on a single that scored Wil Myers.

Offense:

Wilmer Flores got the Mets on the board in the bottom of the second inning.  Flores hit his 12th home run of the season off lefty Clayton Richard.  Flores has been absolutely eating lefties alive this year.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Neil Walker crushed his 21st home run of the year.  The work Walker has done with Kevin Long in regards to hitting left-handed pitching this season has been remarkable.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Jose Reyes singled on a line drive to Jabari Blash.  With Ty Kelly batting, Reyes took off for second and was able to make it to third on a throwing error by Derek Norris.  After a wild pitch, Reyes was able to run home and score the Mets third run of the day.  With two on and two out, T.J. Rivera smacked a double down the left field line to score both Ty Kelly and Jay Bruce and make the score 5-0.

The Mets have won back to back games for the first time since July 6th and 7th.

Steven Matz last took a no-hit bid into the eighth with one out in Game 3 of the LCS.

JZ Player of the Game: Steven freaking Matz! What a performance!

On Deck:

The Mets will start a three-game set with the Arizona D-backs at Chase Field tomorrow night. The game has a start time of 9:40 PM.  Bartolo Colon (10-6, 3.35 ERA) looks to keep the Mets rolling against lefty Robbie Ray (5-11, 4.57 ERA).
