New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco updated the team’s press corps on starting pitcher Steven Matz on Thursday afternoon.

The 27-year-old has been diagnosed with a mild flexor-pronator strain in his left pitching arm and is “likely to miss his next start”, as per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “There’s a good chance we take the conservative route,” Ricco said.

From Tim Healey of Newsday, Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway spoke about the pros and cons of starting Matz on Sunday against the Braves at Citi Field.

When asked what the benefit would be of letting the left-handed Long Islander start, he responded,”There might not be one. That’s one of the reasons we have to make sure we do the right thing here.”

In 21 starts this season (5-9), Matz has a 4.35 earned-run average, a 1.337 WHIP, and an 88 ERA+. Earlier on Thursday it was reported that the MRI on Matz’ left elbow showed no structural damage.
