Matt Reynolds has impressed many within the Mets organization this spring, continuing on his stellar development that spanned over two minor league levels last season.

Mike Puma (NY Post) recently discussed the meteoric rise of the 24 year old prospect who is considered a multi-faceted player with the potential to see major league time soon.

“He’s probably not that far away from playing in the major leagues,” said GM Sandy Alderson.

This comment came a day after Reynolds exploded with a game winning walkoff home run in the ninth inning of Matt Harvey’s first game back against the Tigers.

“He looks solid, confident in the infield, so he’s done a nice job.”

Puma noted Reynolds minor league stats in 2014 which were stellar, generating a .333/.385/.479 slash line in Triple-A Las Vegas, following a midseason promotion from Double-A Binghamton.

The shortstop ‘platoon’ as of this moment belongs to Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada, but Reynolds feels differently about that.

“I came in here with the attitude I’m going to compete my butt off to try and win the job.  I am just going to come here and compete every day…”

When Alderson was asked if Reynolds could break camp with a bench role he said, “People try to pigeon-hole players as utility guys, and that’s not fair.  We’re going to let it play out and see what happens.”

This is refreshing to hear honestly, the Mets need to give their prospects legitimate opportunities to prove themselves as starters if that’s what they’re expecting their production to be.

The veteran presence is clearly being taken in by Reynolds as well, who also said, “It’s a lot of motivation for me to come here, get here early, work hard and stay late and keep on working.”

“I see how David Wright works and Curtis Granderson works and all those guys – Daniel Murphy – they work really hard and that is why they are great players in the game.”

We’ll see you Matt, keep working hard, Mets fans are looking forward to you bringing your baseball talents to Queens.

Lets! Go! Mets!
