According to a report from Andy Martino of SNY, free agent outfielder George Springer is “still asking for well over $150 million”.

Springer, 31, has been heavily linked to the Mets and Blue Jays since free agency began in November. Martino notes that the Mets may be willing to approach that $150 million figure at some point.

Sources told MMO recently that the big sticking point between the Mets and Springer was the amount of years in the deal. Springer is insisting on six years, while the Mets have held steady at four years to this point.

Last week at MMO, we reported that the Blue Jays were not optimistic about their chances of landing Springer. Since then, however, Korean star Ha-seong Kim has signed with the Padres, a player that the Blue Jays were reportedly very interested in. Have to wonder if Toronto now becomes more aggressive in their pursuit of Springer and/or infielder DJ LeMahieu.

Springer posted a 2.2 bWAR while slashing .265/.359/.540 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs during the 2020 shortened season. H is a three time All-Star, MVP of the 2017 World Series, and finished seventh in the MVP voting in 2019.
