The tides have changed in Miami, with Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman approaching their first offseason running the team.

The new owners’ first order of business is to cut payroll from a franchise record $115 million down to $90 million, a source told Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

According to Spencer, an opening day payroll of $90 million would have ranked 26th in the majors last season, ahead of only the Oakland Athletics ($82 million), San Diego Padres ($71 million), Tampa Bay Rays ($70 million) and Milwaukee Brewers ($63 million).

“Moving forward, there’s going to be, at times, unpopular decisions we make on behalf of the organization,” Jeter said. “But, just understand that every decision we make is for the betterment of this organization.”

Spencer adds that if the current roster remains untouched, the 2018 Marlins payroll would approach $140 million, so they would have to elimate $50 million to get to their target of $90 million.

Above is the team’s guaranteed contracts for 2018. At the top, Giancarlo Stanton is the most likely to be moved and has been tied to the Philadelphia Phillies among other teams.

Stanton spoke recently to Jon Heyman and told him that he doesn’t want to be part of another rebuild, while saying that he’s lost for seven years. His record breaking 13-year, $325 million contract he signed before the 2015 season has an opt out after 2020.

“I’m sick of the negativity,” Stanton said. “Anything positive I’ve done, there’s still negativity. I’m doing this, but the owner’s doing that. I’m doing this, but the team’s doing that.” Stanton said following the signing of his record-setting contract, “most of the questions were negative.”

Some other players that teams will have interest in are Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna. However, pitchers Edinson Volquez and Wei-Yin Chen will be tougher to move. The former underwent Tommy John surgery in August and is expected to miss 2018 altogether while the latter is expected to exercise his $10 million player option.

In addition to the list above, MLBTradeRumors.com recently released their salary arbitration projections for the team.

It will be interesting to see how everything shakes out down in Miami. The Marlins could get a nice haul for there three stud outfielders and even their second baseman Dee Gordon.
