The Miami Marlins are close to acquiring right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres, according to Keith Law of ESPN.com. The Marlins will be sending a A-ball pitching prospect Chris Paddack to the Padres.

The second place Marlins were rumored to be shopping for a closer or setup type reliever in recent weeks, and had even checked in with the Yankees about Aroldis Chapman.

Rodney, 39, is having a tremendous season and has only allowed one earned run in 28.2 innings pitched with 33 strikeouts and a 0.852 WHIP while saving 17 games.

He signed a one-year, $2 million deal with San Diego over the winter, and is under team control for next season with a $2 million team option.
