As per Matt Ehalt of The Record, the New York Mets and Miami Marlins have had trade discussions regarding Miami’s 27-year-old backstop J.T. Realmuto.

According to Ehalt’s sources, “Miami’s asking price is still sky-high along the lines of [Michael Conforto or Brandon Nimmo] headlining a deal”, also alluding to the fact that the Mets just pared their system to acquire Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from the Mariners, so the cupboard may be a bit bare.

Realmuto made his first All-Star team in 2018 (his fifth MLB season), hitting .277/.340/.484 in 125 games (531 plate appearances) with 21 home runs, 74 runs batted in, a 131 OPS+ rating, .353 wOBA, and 126 wRC+.

Nimmo, 25, had a breakout season in 2018, finishing the year with a .263/.404/.483 slash line, .385 wOBA, and 149 wRC+ rating after not making the Mets’ initial Opening Day roster.

Conforto returned to the Mets on April 5 of this past season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn posterior capsule in the 25-year-old’s left shoulder in September 2017 to hit .243/.350/.448 with a career-high 28 home runs, 82 RBI, .342 wOBA, and 120 wRC+.

Conforto hit .261/.345/.514 with 14 homers and 43 RBI from August 1 through the end of the season (252 plate appearances), signifying a possible return of the player he was before getting injured.
