Mark Vientos is going on the injured list with left wrist inflammation, the Mets announced Thursday. The 23-year-old rookie was kept out of the lineup for the series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Vientos was left off the lineup card for Thursday’s series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Veteran outfielder Abraham Almonte has had his contract selected from Triple-A Syracuse to take the roster spot.

Vientos returned from Triple-A Syracuse on July 21, finishing the month on an impressive run. Vientos hit .333 with one home run, three runs batted in and a .963 OPS in 23 plate appearances. It appeared that he may have made the right adjustments in Triple-A, but that strong run only lasted for a brief period of time.

Through 14 games in August, Vientos is batting .154/.167/.212 with three extra-base hits and a staggering 17 strikeouts. The Mets, looking towards the 2024 season, have given the young guys an opportunity to be everyday players. But to this point, Vientos has yet to capitalize on those additional plate appearances.

Vientos is all the way down to a .195 batting average with a .518 OPS and a 43 OPS+ in 126 appearances this season. Almonte, who may replace Vientos on the roster, has played in four major league games for the Mets, going 1-for-11 with one double.

Left-handed reliever Josh Walker, who was previously on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain, is being moved to the 60-day injured list to create a 40-man spot for Almonte. He last pitched in the first game of the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves back on August 12. Walker has appeared in 14 major league games for the Mets, pitching to a 8.10 ERA across 10 innings of work.
