Marcus Stroman was back on the mound for the Mets Friday against the Marlins in his third start of Spring. He threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and one walk. He threw 58 pitches and struck out four in the Mets’ loss to the Marlins.
In talking with the media following his outing, Stroman said that as a pitcher who generates a lot of ground balls, to him it doesn’t totally matter who is behind him because he has a trust in the Mets’ entire defense.
“I love everybody that I have behind me and I truly have the confidence in every single guy to the get the job done,” Stroman said, reiterating that there’s never a doubt of who’s behind him, and that he trusts each member of the infield and outfield to get their job done when they need to.
He also discussed his interest in using analytics. Justin Toscano of The Record asked Stroman why began trusting analytics when some pitchers do not.
“I’ve always been someone who has just competed and gone off feel,” he said. “I’m always just trying to adapt and if there’s an opportunity to get better, why would I not take that opportunity? I’m trying to merge both now. Obviously I feel like I have great feel and I’m always going to side with confidence, pitch in my mind.
“But why not add a little bit of analytics and information that’s literally telling me: ‘Hey Stro, when you feel like you don’t have the feel, this is something that you can go back to.’ Man, I’m learning. I’m always in the bullpens just literally learning about pitch profiles, how they work, why they work, tunneling. I’m trying to be the best pitcher I can be in this game.”
Stroman turned it up a notch in his third outing Friday afternoon. He was clocked at a 92 mph sinker, 93 mph fastball, and an 86 mph slider that was generating numerous swings and misses outside the zone with its break.
In talking about Marcus Stroman’s ability to adapt, Kevin Pillar said that Stroman is in tune with his body and knows how to prepare, including adapting to learning how to learn the four-seam and developing a new pitch.
“He’s always seeking to be better,” Pillar said about Stroman.
Stroman said his arm and body feels great and he’s ready to get into routine and ready for his next start as he continues to keep his pitch count up and get reps in ahead of the start of the season in April.
