John Maine hasn’t exactly wowed anyone this spring, on the contrary he’s left many of us wondering if and when we’ll ever see the pre-surgery John Maine again.

Today, Maine took a small step forward as reported by Steve Popper.

John Maine just finished off his five inning outing and the first bit of good news is that he made it through five innings. After that 26-pitch first inning I wouldn’t have bet on that.

Maine allowed six hits, three runs (just one earned) and walked three, striking out five. He got himself in trouble with a pair of wild pitches – each one scoring a run. He finished with 95 pitches and 59 strikes – hardly perfect, but certainly a step up.

Maine has struggled with his command this spring. He had given up 14 runs in 11 innings over his past three starts before todays game.

The Mets need Maine to become a steady presence in the rotation. Maybe today brings him closer to being that.
