Luis Guillorme: the king of spring training.

First, it was catching baseball bats in midair, now it’s drawing a walk after what looks to be perhaps the longest at-bat in MLB history.

Stepping into the dish to kick off the bottom of the fifth inning in Sunday’s matinee with the St. Louis Cardinals, Guillorme faced off against flamethrower Jordan Hicks and engaged in a battle for the ages.

Initially going down 0-2 in the count, Guillorme fouled off 16 pitches throughout the at-bat but ultimately got Hicks to issue the free pass.

Normally, pitchers must face three batters before they are removed, but since Hicks labored through so many pitches, the Cardinals had their trainer go out in an effort to remove him from the game.

According to this article published in the New York Post in 2018, the longest at-bat recorded during regular season play is 21, and while this is spring training, it’s still an impressive feat.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is the Mets’ bench going crazy for Guillorme’s awesome plate appearance.
