Harry Minor, scout who spent 44 of his 65 years in baseball with the New York Mets, passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 89.

Minor began scouting in 1960 after his minor league playing days were over and started his career with the Mets in 1968 as an area scout. He was with the Mets organization until he decided to retire in 2011.

Minor was also national cross checker with the Mets and was vital in the process that brought Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden to the Mets. Other players he scouted for the Mets included Mookie Wilson, Gregg Jefferies, Wally Backman, Hubie Brooks, Lenny Dykstra and Kevin Elster.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson had to say about Minor when he retired, “For close to half a century Harry Minor has been a valued member of our scouting staff. His contributions to our organization are immeasurable.”

Minor won the Scout of the Year Award in 1996 and was give George Genovese Lifetime Achievement Award in Scouting from the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation in 2007.
