Logan Verrett has completed his mission for the New York Mets for the time being, filling in successfully for Jacob deGrom as he battles back from a lat issue and family emergency. You could not have asked for anymore from the spot starter as Verrett put up zeroes in both of his starts.

In two starts, Logan pitched to a 1-0 record with a measley 0.69 ERA. He struck out 11 and had a WHIP of 1.08. During last night’s 11-1 demolition of the Philadelphia Phillies, he went six scoreless innings. He allowed six hits, while walking just one and striking out four. Mets manager, Terry Collins was very happy with the results.

“[Verrett] stepped up and gave us exactly what we needed,” Collins said. “When you need a start, he gives you a good one.” (Mets.com)

Since being returned to New York from Texas in 2015 after being taken as a Rule 5 pick, Verrett has flourished. He has made six starts and pitched to a 2.34 ERA. He continues to be the ultimate spot starter for a team whose pitching is it’s biggest asset.

“It’s a day-by-day situation for me,” Verrett said. “I’m used to [spot starting] by now. Just role with the punches, go with the flow — whatever they need. I’m just happy to help the team win some ballgames. Whatever the role is, starting, spot starting, relieving, it doesn’t matter. As long as we’re winning ballgames, I’m happy to help.”

Verrett, 25, has been the ultimate team player. Being used in various relief appearances while spot starting as well. He has been quite the addition to this team. He has continued to prove that he has what it takes to make it in this league and have a great impact while doing so.

“It means a lot to the whole club,” Collins said. “We know there’s going to be a day where someone shows up sick who’s supposed to pitch, and hopefully this guy’s rested enough. If you need somebody, he can step in and do the job.”

It now becomes a question as to how Collins may use Verrett, who has proven he can get hitters out. It is possible we may see Logan in higher pressure situations and not just a long relief role. Collins though is not yet sure how he may use him and in what situations just yet.

“I just know he’s going to pitch,” Collins said, “because he gets outs and he throws strikes.”

That he does, Verrett very rarely walks batters. Logan did a commendable job filling for deGrom who will make his return to the rotation this Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.
