New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto met with the media via Zoom conference for the first time this spring on Tuesday afternoon. Among many topics, Conforto was asked about his thoughts on this years team, and of course, potential contract extension talks with the club.
When asked if extension talks have occurred yet, Conforto responded saying, “we haven’t started that conversation. For now, it’s great for me to just come in and be able to get my feet wet.”
Conforto added later on that it’s been really cool to grow up in the organization. The 27-year old’s main focus right now seems to be on getting prepared and staying locked in during the 2021 season.
Though it’s still early on in camp, Conforto said he feels the team is in “great shape” thus far. He added, “I think we did a great job covering a lot of areas. Not to mention, the new staff that we have in the front office as well.”
When asked about the addition of Francisco Lindor, Conforto said he has a lot of respect for the star shortstop and is very happy to have him aboard. He said it’s been great getting to know Lindor, and “man it looks good to see him in blue and orange.”
Conforto was asked about the potential of this 2021 team after the busy offseason, and he said, he feels this one most talented teams the Mets have had in a long time, but they can’t get caught up in the hype and have to put in the hard work.
“There always seems to be this hype around our pitching staff, or the young hitters we have, or whatever it may be. And I’ve seen that you fall into this mode of thinking that you’re better than you are. You’re not good unless you win a lot of games,” Conforto said.
The veteran outfielder continued, “we’re looking forward to doing that this year, but we have to put the work in first. We have to have that process, those routines, and those practices like champions before we can go out there and win games. I think it all starts here, and we’ve started that process.”
Conforto has truly developed into a leader in this Mets clubhouse, and he figures to play a tremendous part in their success during the 2021 season, and hopefully beyond.
