The Mets beat the Mets by a score of 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie. In the game dubbed Orange vs Blue, both Mets teams wore blue jerseys. The Mets hosted a Fan First game, where fans got into the park for free and could also get a free beer. The free beer might’ve confused people a few times when the Mets kept doing weird things during the scrimmage that was supposed to only go five innings.

The score was tied 3-3 after five innings, so the Mets decided to keep playing and then switched the offense and defense during a half-inning at one point. One inning earlier in the game also ended in a walk, got to love fake baseball!

Brett Baty hit an opposite field home run that ended up being the game-winner. The Mets third base prospect was recently ranked as the No. 27 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

The game was scoreless in the fourth inning when Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer off Mets minor league right-hander R.J. Alvarez. That lead didn’t last long with J.D. Davis and Khalil Lee both homering in the next half inning to go ahead 3-2.

Brandon Nimmo would lead the next half inning off with a walk and would later tie the game on a wild pitch. Nimmo also walked and stole a base earlier in the game.

Mets veteran Robinson Cano went 2-for-2 with two opposite field singles in his first game after a year-long steroid suspension. Eduardo Escobar was on twice as well with two walks.

Right-hander Jose Rodriguez faced off against left-hander Thomas Szapucki as the starting pitchers. Neither of them allowed a run.

The most impressive guy on the mound for the Mets was right-handed prospect Cole Gordon. Gordon, my No. 28 Mets prospect (write up dropping tomorrow), struck out four in two scoreless innings. The 26-year-old showed a nice mix of fastballs up in the zone and curveballs in any count. Gordon didn’t allow a run and held opponents to a .082 average in his last five starts for Double-A Binghamton in 2021.

Mets top prospect Francisco Alvarez had a potential opposite field home run knocked down by the wind in his first plate appearance of the game and singled in his final. He was hit with a foul ball late in the game (potentially in the knee), but stayed in after the trainer checked him out. He did leave the game for a pinch runner following his single.

The Mets have their first real fake game of 2022 on Saturday when they play the Nationals in West Palm Beach at 6:10 p.m. ET. Left-handed pitching prospect Josh Walker will get the start for the Mets.
