The Mets were down 4-0 to the Brewers on Tuesday night when Pete Alonso came to the plate in the sixth inning with two runners on. For the second straight day, the Polar Bear hit a big-time three-run shot to give the Mets their first runs of the game.

Mets’ star shortstop Francisco Lindor came up to bat with the bases loaded in the next inning with a chance to give New York the lead. Lindor did exactly that with a grand slam that put the Mets up 7-4.

The Mets held on to win 7-5 over the Brewers, their sixth straight win, and all seven of the runs were driven in by their middle-of-the-order producers. The three runs batted in for Alonso gave him a new career-high with 121 and has him going into Wednesday only three shy of tying the Mets single-season record set by Mike Piazza in 1999 and tied by David Wright in 2008. It was Alonso’s 37th home run of the season which ties him for second in the NL.

For Lindor, his third grand slam with the Mets –team record for shortstop– extended his career-high to 99 RBIs. The 25 home runs are the most Lindor has hit in a season since he blasted 32 in 2019.

Alonso leads the NL (2nd in MLB) with his 121 RBIs and Lindor is fourth in the NL (7th in MLB) with 99 RBIs. That gives the Mets combo 220 runs batted in together, more than any other teammates in the majors with Paul Goldschmidt (112) and Nolan Arenado (98) second at 210.

The big night from Lindor brought his fWAR for the season up to 6.6, that’s good enough for fifth among all Major League Baseball players this season. Alonso’s fWAR for the season is at 3.2 ranking him 22nd among NL position players.

The duo of Lindor and Alonso will have to stay hot for the Mets to stave off the Braves for the division title.
