The New York Mets announced that LHP Anthony Kay, who was selected with the 31st overall pick of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, underwent Tommy John surgery today at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He will miss the entire 2017 season.
So you know, the Mets knew that Kay had some serious concerns about his elbow, which is why they gave him a signing bonus of $1.1 million which was significantly lower than the slot value of $1,972,100.
A Long Island native who was selected out of UConn, Kay went 9-2 this season and helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament. Posting a 2.65 ERA in 17 starts, Kay’s 263 strikeouts set a new UConn strikeout record that was previously held by Matt Barnes, now with the Red Sox.
