After an emotional postponement of their game on Thursday, the Mets stormed back to win the first of their doubleheader against the Yankees by a score of 6-4. Michael Wacha got the ball to start the game for the Mets, but he pitched poorly and raised his season ERA to 7.41. Offensively, Pete Alonso broke out of his slump in a big way, hitting a game-tying home run in the sixth.

Pitching

Wacha quickly found himself down in this game, giving up an RBI double to Clint Frazier and a bases loaded walk to Gary Sanchez in the first inning. The second inning did not fair any better for Wacha, giving up a two-run home run to Frazier, giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead. Wacha finished his outing after just three innings, giving up four runs on six hits and one walk.

Walker Lockett replaced Wacha in the fourth and pitched two excellent innings, giving up just one walk and collecting three strikeouts.

Dellin Betances got the ball in the sixth inning, giving up just one walk.

Edwin Diaz  entered in the seventh and final inning of the game, striking out the side to earn the save, his second of the year.

The Mets’ bullpen was very successful in the game, pitching four scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and two walks.

Offense

The Mets offense was nearly nonexistent until the fifth inning, when Dominic Smith drew a bases loaded walk to give the Mets their first run.

In the sixth, Pete Alonso hit a three-run home run, driving in J.D. Davis and Michael Conforto to tie the game at four. Smith and Jake Marisnick followed up with homers of their own to give the Mets a 6-4 lead.

Conforto and Marisnick were the only two players in the Mets lineup with multiple hits.

In some late breaking news, to make room for David Peterson, Walker Lockett, the winning pitcher in the opener of the twin bill, has been designated for assignment. Mets manager Luis Rojas announced the news at his game one press conference.

On Deck

The Mets look to win their second game of the day and sweep their doubleheader against the Yankees. David Peterson gets the start. The game can be seen on SNY.
