For the majority of the New York Mets season the big question surrounding the team has been what will they get from the back-end of the rotation?
Well, for one time through the rotation, the Mets got good starts from everyone – something that seemed impossible just last week – including Jason Vargas finally pitching like the Mets had hoped.
The last turn through the rotation of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz and aforementioned Vargas:
31 IP, 23 H, 2 ER, 7 BB, 34 K, 0.58 ERA
Those numbers are exactly what the team needs right now, and lowered the Mets starters ERA for the season down to 3.89 which ranks ninth in the National League.
Sydnergaard and deGrom continued their strong seasons while Vargas pitched five scoreless in his return from the disabled list, Wheeler allowed only one earned run with nine strikeouts and Matz finished if off with six scoreless against the Brewers on Thursday night.
In that 31 innings, the Mets rotation didn’t allow a home run despite ranking 12th in the NL with their 1.16 HR/9 rate.
If the Mets are going to win with any type of consistency right now they will need continued strong performances from their rotation to cover for an offense that has been stagnant in May.
