The New York Mets (28-27) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (25-29) 2-0 on Tuesday night. Kodai Senga and Ranger Suárez both dominated, and each pitcher matched zeros for the majority of the night. The Mets also got stellar defense from Brandon Nimmo, who made multiple highlight-reel catches.

Both offenses were shut down for the first three innings. Senga struck out three batters, and only allowed a single to Kody Clemens the first time through the order. Suárez matched the Japanese starter and allowed two hits while striking out two across three scoreless innings.

Senga’s shutout bid almost ended in the fourth inning, but was saved by Nimmo. The 30-year-old hung his signature ghost fork to Nick Castellanos, who drove it to left-center field. The ball would have cleared the fence, but Nimmo timed his jump perfectly and robbed the former Tiger of a solo home run.

After the Mets took away a home run in the top of the fourth, they added their own in the bottom half of the inning. Leading off the inning, Francisco Lindor turned on a high fastball to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. It was his 10th home run of the year, and

The 1-0 lead was all Senga needed. The former Soft-Bank Hawk retired 12 batters in a row and finished his night with his ninth strikeout. Senga lowered his ERA to 3.44 after his outstanding start, but more impressively, walked zero batters across seven scoreless innings. He only allowed one hit, too.

The Mets added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and chased Suárez out of the game. Starling Marte singled with one out in the inning and advanced to second after Jeff McNeil laid down a sacrifice bunt. Suárez was pulled from the game after he walked Tommy Pham with two outs, and was charged with an earned run when Eduardo Escobar tagged Connor Brogdon for a single up the middle to increase the Mets’ lead to 2-0.

Suárez was great himself, but he couldn’t match Senga’s dominance. The left-hander went into the seventh inning for the first time in 2023 and struck out four Mets across 6 2/3 innings. His only blemish was a solo home run allowed to Lindor, and the run charged to him when he exited the game.

The Mets held on to their lead from the seventh inning on. David Robertson earned his ninth save of the season and got Bryson Stott to ground into a game-ending double play. New York pitching shut down Philadelphia and struck out 11 batters in nine innings. They faced just one batter above the minimum.

The Mets’ victory over the Phillies earned them their first win on Tuesdays in 2023, and over .500 again.

Player of the Game: Kodai Senga

Kodai Senga was the star of Tuesday’s game. The newly signed Met struck out nine Phillies and walked zero across seven scoreless innings. Senga relied heavily on his fastball and ghost fork tonight, displaying how dominant he can be when he avoids the walk.

On Deck

The Mets will face Aaron Nola on Wednesday night. The Phillies ace has struggled this season and has pitched to a 4.59 ERA in 11 starts. Carlos Carrasco takes the mound for New York and is coming off an outstanding start against the Cubs. The Venezuelan struck out four in his outing against Chicago, and only allowed one earned run across 6 2/3 innings, lowering his ERA from 8.68 to 6.75.

The first pitch of game two is set for 7:10 p.m. The game will be available to watch on SNY and MLB Network (blackout restrictions apply). It can be listened to on 880 WCBS.
