New York Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki began his rehab assignment with the Las Vegas 51s last night with a bang.

Plawecki hit a two-run go-ahead homer in the fifth inning for Vegas in their 4-3 win over the Sacramento River Cats. He also struck out and flew out to left field.

The 27-year-old played five innings behind the plate in his first game action since April 11 against the Miami Marlins when he suffered a hairline fracture in his right hand.

51s’ manager Tony DeFrancesco told Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review Journal after the game, “It was good to see, he hit a nice breaking ball up in the zone but you can tell that it’s going to take a few more than one game to get him ready to hit some major league pitching.”

Plawecki was hitting .188/.393/.200 in seven major league games this season for the Mets.

Right-handed reliever Hansel Robles also began his rehab assignment last night for Vegas. He allowed one run on three hits, walk and two strikeouts in his inning of work.

Robles suffered a hamstring strain on May 8 and has a 5.23 ERA in the majors this year.
