While Major League Baseball is on hold because of the lockout, Minor League Baseball will still go on as long as players aren’t on an MLB 40-man roster. That’s good news because now that the Super Bowl is in the rearview mirror, we need some type of baseball to help us think about spring being around the corner.

Over at The Athletic, prospect analyst Keith Law helped us out with those thoughts by releasing his top 20 prospects in the New York Mets’ system on Monday. You can read the full story and analysis here (subscription required), but we’ll provide some of the pertinent details below. Here are Law’s top-20 Mets prospects for the upcoming season:

  1. Francisco Álvarez, C
  2. Ronny Mauricio, SS
  3. Brett Baty, 3B
  4. Mark Vientos, 3B
  5. Alex Ramirez, OF
  6. Matt Allan, RHP
  7. J.T. Ginn, RHP
  8. Khalil Lee, OF
  9. Carlos Cortes, OF
  10. Mike Vasil, RHP
  11. Nick Plummer, OF
  12. Dominic Hamel, RHP
  13. Calvin Ziegler, RHP
  14. Eric Orze, RHP
  15. Jose Butto, RHP
  16. Christian Scott, RHP
  17. Robert Dominguez, RHP
  18. Jaylen Palmer, OF
  19. Junior Santos, RHP
  20. JT Schwartz, 1B

There’s obviously no surprise at the first five prospects listed above because each of them landed on Law’s top-100 MLB prospect list not too long ago. When briefly discussing potential 2022 impact, Law mentioned it’s possible none of these prospects does anything huge at the big-league level since New York is mostly set at each position. Of course, Lee could make some appearance in Flushing depending on what’s going on with the outfield depth chart. Speaking of depth, let’s also not forget that New York signed Plummer to a major league deal this offseason. He also noted Vasil as the sleeper of this particular bunch.

Our own Michael Mayer recently released a list of his top 50 prospects in the Mets’ farm system. There are plenty of overlapping names, but some different rankings and a few dudes included that weren’t mentioned by Law, so it’s worth checking out to compare and contrast.
