Ever since he created his Twitter account, former Mets star Keith Hernandez has been extremely active and very open to engaging with his followers. Between videos and updates on his cat Hadji, to providing his thoughts on the team, his twitter has been a real treat for Mets fans thus far.
However, this past weekend the former sure-handed, Gold Glove first baseman committed a costly error. On the team’s off-day Friday, Hernandez used his social media platform to hit on a female Mets fan and yoga instructor from Long Island after she replied to one of his tweets.
Apparently the two had met in the past at a book signing, and after having a back and forth Twitter exchange, Hernandez told her social media has him “leery.” He then publicly sent her what everyone thought was his cell phone number for all to see. However as it turns out, the number wasn’t exactly his.
According to David Brand of the Queens Eagle, that phone number belonged to a man from Florida named Michael. The poor man woke up the next day to thousands of calls and texts from followers and fans hoping to get in touch with the former World Series Champion.
Michael told Brand that he was extremely confused by the whole situation, and he doesn’t even know who Hernandez is, “I’ve never even heard of him,” he said.
Neither Hernandez nor the Mets have commented on the matter. Hernandez has since deleted the tweets, though the woman’s half of the conversation remains live, and there are plenty of screenshot’s of the exchange flying around social media.
