After the Mets 10-7 loss to the Giants the team announced that they had promoted lefty Josh Smoker from the Las Vegas 51s and optioned fellow lefty reliever Josh Edgin to Vegas.

Smoker, a former Washington Nationals first rounder, is 3-2 with three saves and a 4.11 ERA in 52 games this season for the 51s in his first taste of Triple-A action.

The WHIP at 1.474 is a bit alarming but we’re talking about Vegas here, the number that jumps out to me is the 81 strikeouts in 57 innings and only 18 walks in that span.

Recently, Smoker has been even better allowing only two earned runs in his last 17.2 innings and holding opponents to a .231 average in that time.

The Mets signed the hard throwing lefty in April of 2015 after he spent the previous season pitching for the Rockford Aviators in the Frontier League.

Smoker was added to the 40-man roster during the offseason and got his first call up as the 26th man on July 26th but didn’t get into the game.

Edgin struggled in his first big league action since 2014, he allowed four runs in 3.2 innings on four walks, three hits and five strikeouts.
