Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, caught up with Jose Reyes earlier today and asked him about his future with the Amazin’s. Jose had some nice words to say about the Mets, and how he feels about resigning with the club.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be back or not…This is the only team that I played for so far in my whole career…I feel comfortable here. I feel good with the ownership. I feel like we are family and stuff like that. At the same time, this is a business. And to be honest with you, I don’t know what’s going to happen. Right now I want to finish the couple of remaining games strong and see what happens.”
Sandy Alderson said during his interview on SNY last week that his first order of business is to address the Reyes situation. But a team source told ESPN’s Jayson Stark that the Mets aren’t going to drag negotiations into the winter with Jose Reyes.
We all know that the Mets #1 priority after the season ends is to re-sign the speedy Reyes. We all know that. However, the question still remains whether or not Jose Reyes will take what the Mets offer him.
From what I’ve been reading and hearing, the Mets may not be able to offer Reyes a fair market value contract. It only takes one team to jump into the pool and give Reyes more money and more years (more than what he is actually worth quite frankly).
Personally, I don’t want to see Jose go, but it seems unlikely that the Mets will have enough cash to win a bidding war for Jose Reyes. It’s likely that during this homestand we may see the last of Jose Reyes as a Met.
We’ll see how the negotiations play out.
