A couple of weeks ago, we learned José Quintana would begin throwing live batting practice. Now, we know he has been assigned to the St. Lucie Mets’ roster to start a rehab assignment. Given his injury occurred during spring training, he will need a full ramp up period as if the spring never happened.

He’s starting for St. Lucie on Tuesday night.

Tim Healey of Newsday reports that Mets veteran starter José Quintana will throw live batting practice on Monday as he continues to progress in his rehab from rib surgery. Healey notes that a rehab assignment should start shortly after.

José Quintana, who has yet to pitch for the Mets this season, took a step in the right direction with his recovery from rib surgery. The 34-year-old received positive news on his CT scan Friday, and will start mound work for the first time tomorrow. “It’s time to get ready for baseball,” Quintana said.

He underwent bone-graft surgery in the middle of March, which was expected to keep him off the mound until July. It seems that timetable is still right, given the steps the veteran needs to complete to return to the big leagues.

Quintana signed a two-year, $26 million deal with the Mets in the offseason. He pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022, owning a 6-7 record with a 2.93 ERA in 165 2/3 innings.

The health and availability of the Mets rotation is beginning to look much brighter, as Carlos Carrasco is being activated off the injured list for Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. Once Quintana is able to debut for the team, Buck Showalter should have the best version of his rotation.
