The Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced its final installment of individual award winners for the 2020 season on Thursday evening on MLB Network. And there weren’t a ton of surprises in this season’s Most Valuable Player Award voting.

In the American League, Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu took home the honors, receiving 21-of-30 first-place votes to pull ahead of Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez and Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu in the final balloting (full voting results here).

Abreu, 33, put together a terrific season for the Southsiders, hitting .317/.370/.617 (167 wRC+, 2.6 wins above replacement; FanGraphs) with 19 home runs, 60 RBIs, 15 doubles over 60 games for Chicago (262 plate appearances).

Per Baseball Savant, the veteran first baseman’s 14.3% barrel rate, 92.9 MPH average exit velocity, 53.3% hard-hit rate, and .585 expected slugging percentage ranked in the 91st, 95th, 96th, and 95th percentiles leaguewide, respectively.

In the National League, Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves — a player whose exploits between the lines are quite familiar to Mets fans — earned his first MVP award in convincing fashion, earning 28-of-30 first-place votes to beat out Mookie Betts of the Dodgers and Manny Machado of the Padres (full voting results here).

Over 60 games (262 plate appearances, as well), the 31-year-old first baseman hit a career-high .341/.462/.640 with 13 homers, 23 doubles, 53 RBIs, 187 wRC+, and an NL-leading 3.4 fWAR (FanGraphs).

Freeman’s Statcast page is littered with red, as well. The left-handed hitter’s expected batting average, expected weighted on-base average, and expected slugging percentage (.341/.441/.660) all led the majors among qualified hitters, and his 54.2% hard-hit rate put him in the 96th percentile among the same group.

Mets standout Dominic Smith finished 13th in NL MVP voting following his breakout .316/.377/.616 season at the plate. Smith’s 165 wRC+ was good for sixth in baseball this season.

Neither Jacob deGrom (2.38 ERA/2.26 FIP, 104 K, 2.6 fWAR) or Michael Conforto (.322/.412/.515, 157 wRC+, 2.0 fWAR) received votes.
