The Mets announced on Wednesday that they made four subtractions from major league camp. Right-handed starting pitcher Corey Oswalt, catcher Bruce Maxwell, and infielder Brandon Drury have all been reassigned, while Jordan Yamamoto has been optioned to Triple-A.

These subtractions have brought the total number of players currently in major league camp down to 40. Yamamoto and Oswalt had been competing with David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi for the final two spots in New York’s season-opening rotation, so it appears as though the two southpaws have made the cut. Despite Oswalt’s strong performance this spring having drawn the praises of manager Luis Rojas, his chances of making the Opening Day roster were always slim since he would’ve needed to be added back onto the 40-man roster.

Yamamoto and Oswalt will both likely be called upon at some point this season since starting pitching depth should be very important following 2020’s shortened season. As for Maxwell and Drury, they will serve as two more depth options with major league experience, which has been a big part of the new front office’s strategy since taking over.
