The Daily News is debunking the report on Saturday by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that Mets Assistant GM John Ricco is not in the running as a potential replacement for Omar Minaya.
The possibility that Omar Minaya could be reassigned or dismissed has led to speculation about potential replacements. A report on FoxSports.com Saturday said that the team has determined that assistant GM John Ricco was not ready to be a GM. While that could ultimately prove true, all indications are that Ricco is not out of contention for the job at this time. While upheaval is inevitable after this season, the team is still weighing options in every area. Jerry Manuel is probably in his final weeks as Mets manager, but the team has not yet determined his replacement (though it will certainly not be former Mets manager Bobby Valentine).
Rosenthal had said that the Mets feel Ricco is simply not ready for the task, and so they would look elsewhere.
At the same time, the Daily News also debunks Peter Gammons’ claim that Bobby Valentine will be the next Mets manager. It’s a claim that Gammons has repeated a few times on various outlets including the MLB Network and WFAN.
I don’t understand why these national sports journalists feel compelled to weigh in on who the Mets manager or GM will be. Their information always seems so sketchy and vague at best yet they like to speak in absolutes. Personally, I feel that the many beat writers who cover the Mets, have a better read of the situation and I put more weight on what they report.
