Rich Couthino of ESPN NY, had  solid piece on Johan Santana yesterday and I wanted to share some of Johan’s great quotes on the upcoming season and his thoughts on all the media naysayers who see the Mets floundering near the bottom of the standings.

According to Couthino, the resident ace of the Met staff sees things very differently and vows things will be different in 2010 for the Mets and their fans.

“I know we had a horrible season last year but everyone should realize injuries played a large role in that and the whole rotation is feeling good.”

When asked to comment on what many in the media are saying about the Mets chances, Santana boldly went where no Met pitcher has gone before.

“Predictions are predictions and we could care less what the media thinks about us. I am being honest here and I do not mean to sound impolite but we have good players and good pitchers on this staff. We know it is not going to be easy but if we all do our jobs, we will be just fine.”

That wasn’t all…

“I came here to win a championship and now two years have passed and I have not even pitched in a postseason game and that needs to change this year. And it is not just my responsibility to be prepared on the days I pitch. I have to help the other guys in this rotation any way I can.”

I wish I was as confident in this team as Santana obviously is. Johan is just 100% pure awesomeness and there is no quit in him. It’s too bad we couldn’t go back to the sixties and give him the ball every four days instead of every five days.

It’s a shame that Pelfrey, Maine and Perez have spent two full seasons with Johan and yet not one of them have picked up even an ounce of his grit and determination. Especially Ollie who Santana has tried to work with ever since he came to the Mets.

Still, you can’t help but love Santana. He has all the class, ability and mastery of Tom Seaver, coupled with all the passion, determination and intensity of Tug McGraw. It’s quite a combination, and we are so fortunate to have him on our team.

Regardless of what the team does this season, one thing we can all count on is another tremendous season from Johan Santana. He is the ultimate warrior!
