Accompanying the news that the New York Mets would likely be without Juan Lagares for the remainder of the season after tearing ligaments in the big toe on his left foot, the team announced that they would be activating left-handed relief pitcher Jerry Blevins from paternity leave.

Blevins, 34, was placed on personal leave on May 15 and returns to availability tonight against the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks who are in town for the weekend series.

In eight innings of work this season, Blevins has an uncharacteristically high 5.63 earned-run average (career 3.42 mark) and just as shocking 1.500 WHIP (1.226 career WHIP).

He’s been much more effective against right-handed batters this season than against lefties (.125 BAA vs. righties; .273 against lefties), which has been just another oddity to Blevins’ (and the Mets) season thus far.
