The Mets don’t have a manager but they do have a pitching coach. The club announced on Tuesday that Jeremy Hefner will return for the 2022 season.

Hefner joins Hugh Quattlebaum and Kevin Howard as the only coaches from 2021 to remain with the organization. The Mets exercised Hefner’s contract option to do so.

“I’m extremely excited to continue working with this group and build on the systems and practices we’ve implemented,” Hefner said in a statement. “I saw a lot of development from the rotation and bullpen and am very optimistic for even more success from the pitching staff moving forward.”

“Jeremy has done an outstanding job of working with the entire pitching staff and they’ve all benefitted from his leadership and expertise,” team president Sandy Alderson said in a statement. “He has blended analytics with his knowledge to provide players with tools for individual and team success.”

The Mets finished among the top third of clubs with a 3.90 team ERA. The 35-year old pitched two seasons for New York in 2012 and 2013. Hefner joined the Mets as pitching coach in 2020 after spending the previous three years with the Minnesota Twins organization.
