Mets top pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia had the best start of the season last night after some struggles and a stint on the disabled list.
The young righthander hurled seven one-hit innings for Double-A Binghamton, striking out eight and walking two in the Mets’ 5-0 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
“I pitched pretty well,” Mejia said. “My fastball, cutter, change and two-seamer were all good and I felt much stronger. I felt like I could throw any pitch for a strike.”
Mejia was dominant and cruised through the first four inning until finally letting up a fifth inning bloop single. He finished one strikeout short of his career-high of nine over two years ago when he was with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Mejia still needs more polish and ideally, he should spend at least a half of a season in AAA before being inserted into the rotation in 2011.
That said, look for Mejia to be among the call-ups on September 1st. Whether he returns to the bullpen at that time is yet unknown, but as long as he’ll be with the team, I hope he gets at least a start or two.
