This morning, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon spoke to reporters at the Mets Spring Training complex in Port St. Lucie and addressed the Madoff related lawsuit and how it effects the Mets.

MetsBlog posts the following recap:

He says the Mets/Madoff situation has been a distraction, and he feels bad for his family who has taken a lot of criticism.

  • He says they will fight this situation and will be victorious in the end, and will not give up control of the team.
  • Regarding the sale of the team, he said they are exploring all of their options, but will not give daily updates.
  • He says there is a lot of interest in the team, from a lot of people which haven’t been reported.
  • There is payroll flexibility to go both up and down, but Alderson has to make that determination.
  • Regarding Jose Reyes, there is nothing stopping the Mets financially from re-signing him, if he’s the right fit.
  • The biggest change he’s looking for are wins for the fans.
  • He feels Sandy Alderson, his group and Terry Collins have a good handle of what’s going on, and they have brought a new feeling, and a new way of doing business to the Mets.
