Visiting the SNY booth during Sunday’s game against the Nationals, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said that newcomer Jed Lowrie has begun taking ground balls and swinging from both sides of the plate.

The infielder has missed time with a capsule strain in his left knee, and as he hasn’t gotten any Spring Training at-bats, he will surely spend some extended time in Florida before joining the Mets up north.

Lowrie, 34, was signed to a two-year, $20 million contract this offseason after making his first All Star Team with the Athletics. He hit .267/.353/.448 with 23 home runs and 99 RBIs en route to finishing 20th in MVP voting. He logged innings at both second and third base in 2018, putting up league-average defensive metrics at each position.

With Todd Frazier injured as well, the Mets Opening Day infield will probably feature Jeff McNeil at third base, Amed Rosario at shortstop, Robinson Cano at second base, and either Pete Alonso or Dominic Smith at first base.
