Mets general manager Jared Porter was on WFAN this Friday afternoon on the heals of the Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco” href=”https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/01/mets-officially-acquire-francisco-lindor-and-carlos-carrasco.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>blockbuster trade that brought star shortstop Francisco Lindor and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to the Mets.

Porter noted that Sandy Alderson and Indians GM Chris Antonetti did most of the heavy lifting on the scope of the trade before Jared was a part of the Mets organization. That falls in line with Sandy saying the blockbuster had been in the works for quite awhile, but turned more serious on Monday of this week.

The biggest question from Mets fans following the trade has been what else will the Mets do. Can they still afford George Springer or Trevor Bauer? Will they go over the luxury tax threshold?

Our own Christopher Soto has the Mets currently about $28 million under that $210 million threshold, which would make it tough to get a top tier player and other pieces as well.

Porter was asked if the $210 threshold was a hard number, “No, I think it’s kind of a barometer and something you always measure yourself against and see what makes sense and when it makes sense, and obviously Steve’s a big part of that too. But no, I don’t think it’s something we to have a line in the sand on or anything.”

The words from Porter mess with the fact that Sandy hasn’t said anything about using the threshold as a hard cap. Certainly a refreshing thought for Mets fans that want to see the Mets continue to add to an offseason that has brought Lindor, Carrasco, Trevor May, and James McCann.

When Porter was asked specifically about Springer he leaned away from getting specific, “Springer’s a great player, he’s done a really good job of having a couple of good seasons putting himself in position to be one of the top free agents available.”
